π Basic Rules
1. The 'i before e' rule
Use i before e except after c (when the sound is 'ee').
β Correct: believe, achieve, chief, field β After 'c': receive, deceive, ceiling, receipt β οΈ Exceptions: weird, seize, protein, caffeine
2. Doubling consonants
When adding -ing, -ed, or -er to a word ending in consonant-vowel-consonant, double the final consonant.
β Examples: run β running, shop β shopping, big β bigger β Two syllables: begin β beginning, occur β occurred β Don't double: help β helping (two consonants), rain β raining (two vowels)
3. Silent 'e' rule
Drop the silent e when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel.
β Drop 'e': hope β hoping, make β making, love β loving β Keep 'e': hope β hopeful, care β careful (consonant suffix) β Keep 'e': see β seeing, agree β agreeing (vowel before 'e')

4. Forming plurals
Most nouns add -s, but there are important exceptions:
β Add -es: words ending in s, x, z, ch, sh β boxes, churches, wishes β Consonant + y: change y to i and add -es β baby β babies, city β cities β Vowel + y: just add -s β toy β toys, key β keys β Words ending in f/fe: change to -ves β leaf β leaves, knife β knives

5. Adding suffixes to words ending in 'y'
When adding suffixes, check what comes before the 'y':
β Consonant + y: change y to i β happy β happiness, try β tried β Vowel + y: keep the y β play β played, joy β joyful β Keep 'y' for -ing: try β trying, carry β carrying
These words break the usual rules β memorize them:
Different patterns: their, friend, said, because, people Silent letters: knight, write, island, muscle, receipt Double trouble: necessary (1 c, 2 s), accommodation (2 c, 2 m)
8. Memory tricks (mnemonics)
Use these tricks to remember difficult spellings:
